Midwives now able to prescribe additional medicines

The list of medicines midwives can prescribe without calling upon a doctor has been extended, with six new medicines added, including antibiotics. The list of medicines now stands at 29, an increase from the initial list approved in 2014 when new regulations were brought in enabling midwives to act without sending for a doctor, often in urgent circumstances. The regulations saw the creation of a list of medicines based on best practice from the UK: including pain relief medicines, drugs promoting the baby and mother’s well-being, and products assisting the mother during labour.

Health Minister, Neil Costa, said the changes can be “hugely significant” to mothers and infants.
